Summary
Comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college — a thriller that Sidney immediately recognizes as a potential Broadway smash. Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? Is anyone really safe when a desperate man sees a clean shot at success? Deathtrap is a sharply funny play full of twists and turns that keep an audience on the edge of their seats until the curtain closes.
Characters
Sidney Bruhl – A once successful playwright who hasn’t had a hit in many years. Polished, dashing, devious. Thinks he’s the smartest man in the room and wants people to know it. Is “on stage” even when at home.
Clifford Anderson – A playwright and recent student of Sidney’s. Very clever, but hides it behind a façade of innocence and naïveté.
Myra Bruhl – Sidney’s wife. Sophisticated, but sweet and sensitive. Encouraging of Sidney’s career and has been supporting them financially for the past few years.
Helga ten Dorp – A renowned Dutch psychic who has visions of the future. Is in and out of this world and her own world. Knows she’s a celebrity and buys into the show of her gift.
Porter Milgrim – Sidney’s lawyer. Professional, prudish, observant.
